Growing cannabis at home is a good way to have some good quality marijuana whenever you want some. In several states, you can even get a license and grow it for commercial use and make money off of it. So, if you want to grow marijuana legal concerns should be your priority because you do not want to violate any laws. To make sure you are working within the established legal frameworks, you should know exactly what your state’s position on marijuana is. Right now, there are 10 states across the country where you can grow weed for recreational use, and we are going to discuss the caveats to that process.
Legal Status of Marijuana in the US
The US, and the whole world for that matter, has become more and more accepting of cannabis, and more states allow either recreational or medical use of that substance. Despite marijuana and its main components like CBD and THC have proven to be viable in helping people with chronic pain, depression, anxiety, and a multitude of other issues, the majority of states still oppose the legalization or decriminalization of marijuana. So, can you grow weed in the US? After doing some research with the help or our friends at Dr. Dabber we discovered where and under which conditions you can grow your own weed.
Alaska
You can buy marijuana for recreational use in Alaska at dispensaries if you are 21 or older. You can also grow up to 6 plants at home if you are 21 or older too but there’s a catch: only 3 of the plants can be mature at one time. You can also get a commercial license for growing weed in Alaska, and if you manage to get that license, you can grow as much as you want without any limits.
California
Same thing here – you can plant, harvest, and process up to 6 plants at home if you are 21 or older.
Colorado
Colorado is known for its quite progressive attitude towards cannabis, especially when it comes to the medical use of the plant. You can also buy recreational weed here at any of the local dispensaries. Again, you can grow up to 6 plants at home without a license. As for the license, you can also get it in Colorado to grow and sell your weed on a commercial scale.
Maine
Maine has been rather progressive in terms of marijuana use as it adopted the medical weed back in 1999 and allowed the recreational use of the plant back in 2016. If you’ve been wondering how to grow more than 6 plants at a time, Maine is the place to go. Here, you can have 3 mature plants at a time plus 12 immature plants and however many seedlings you want. Basically, you can have a year-round supply of weed as your plants would grow in cycles. You can also get a commercial license, which allows you to grow unlimited amounts of weed and sell it.
Massachusetts
Again, up to 6 plants are allowed at one time for either medical or recreational use.
Michigan
Same deal here, but you get to grow up to 12 plants per household.
Nevada
You can grow recreational weed in Nevada too, and again, you have the limit of 6 plants at a time. Another catch here is that you can grow your own cannabis if you live 25 or more miles away from the nearest dispensary.
Oregon
Oregon allows you to grow up to 4 plants at a time regardless of the number of adults living in your household.
Vermont
Recreational use of cannabis is allowed in Oregon since 2018 and you can grow your own plants too. However, you will be limited to just two mature plants and four immature plants at one go. The official dispensaries are scheduled to open in Oregon on May 1, 2022, so you might wonder where you would get the weed up until that time. Well, you can grow it yourself. It is also quite likely that you’ll be able to get a license too.
Washington, D.C.
Things get trickier in Washington, D.C. as the respective laws have not been passed yet. However, you can already grow your own weed if you have a medical card. Washington currently is somewhere in between, so you might want to wait for the official statements on the matter.
Medical Use
In addition to the states where weed is totally legal, you have several states where you can grow medical weed if you have the permission:
- Arizona
- Hawaii
- Illinois
- Missouri
- Montana
- New Mexico
- Oklahoma
- Rhode Island
There, you can only grow cannabis if you have a medical card, and the number of plants would be limited from state to state. In certain cases, the patients’ caretakers can get a card to take care of the growing process.
Wrap Up
More states are considering the legalization of recreational cannabis, so it might be a matter of a couple of years till we see more Americans joining in and growing their own plants. Overall, the process of legalization is getting its momentum as many states have legalized the recreational use of marijuana in the past couple of years. So, the chances of many more states joining in are quite high. Right now, if you are lucky to live in the states on our list, you can grow your own cannabis legally as long as you stay within the limits imposed by the state government.
