Aphelinus abdominalis is a highly effective parasitic wasp used to control a wide range of aphid species—especially those that are less responsive to other parasitoids, such as Potato Aphids and Foxglove/Glasshouse Aphids. This species provides dual-action efficiency: females lay eggs inside aphids, while also feeding directly on others, resulting in higher overall mortality and stronger population suppression. Ideal for use in greenhouses, grow rooms, or outdoor crops experiencing recurring aphid issues, A. abdominalis thrives in warm conditions and lives longer than most Aphidius species.
How It Works
Females target aphid nymphs, inserting their eggs into the host. As the larva develops, the aphid swells and hardens into a gray or brown mummy. Adults chew their way out and continue the cycle. Unlike many parasitoids, Aphelinus abdominalis also consumes aphids it does not parasitize, providing an immediate reduction in pest numbers while fueling egg production. Shipped as mummified aphids, they begin working almost immediately after release.
Targets These Aphid Species
-
Potato Aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae)
-
Foxglove/Glasshouse-Potato Aphid (Aulacorthum solani)
-
Green Peach Aphid (Myzus persicae)
-
Cotton/Melon Aphid (Aphis gossypii)
-
California Laurel Aphid (Euthoracaphis umbellulariae)
-
Bird Cherry-Oat Aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi)
-
Cereal Aphid (Sitobion avenae)
-

For broader coverage, pair with generalist predators such as green lacewings or minute pirate bugs.
Ideal Conditions
-
Temperature: 70–77°F (effective above 68°F)
-
Humidity: 60–80% RH
-
Longevity: Several weeks under optimal conditions
-

Application Instructions
Vial Release – Walk-Through Method
-
Open vial early in the day or afternoon.
-
Hold at 45° while walking through the crop, tapping gently to release adults.
-
Repeat for 2–4 days, then place vial upright in canopy for remaining emergence.
Vial Release – Hanging Method
-
Tie vial among leaves and leave for 3–4 days.
-
Adults will emerge gradually.
-
Repeat if needed; place vial at crop base for final emergence.
Release Rates
-
Preventative: 2–5 wasps per 100 sq. ft., weekly
-
Curative: 10–25 wasps per 100 sq. ft., weekly until aphid pressure decreases

Quick Tips
-
Release early for best establishment
-
Focus distribution near aphid clusters
-
Avoid spraying during or just before release
-
Works best when combined with generalist predators
-
Higher temperatures boost parasitism and reproduction
