Cryptolaemus montrouzieri, commonly called the Mealybug Destroyer, is a highly aggressive predator of mealybugs and other soft-bodied pests. Both adults and larvae actively feed on pests, providing effective biological control without chemicals. A single beetle can consume up to 250 mealybugs in its lifetime, making this species especially valuable in greenhouses, orchards, vineyards, and indoor crops where infestations are well established.
How It Works
Females lay up to 500 eggs near mealybug colonies. Upon hatching, larvae begin feeding immediately on mealybug eggs, nymphs, and adults. The wax-covered larvae often resemble mealybugs themselves, allowing them to blend in and hunt undetected. Adult beetles are dark brown with orange heads and actively prey on mealybugs. In the absence of mealybugs, C. montrouzieri will feed on aphids, scale crawlers, thrips, mites, and whiteflies, making it a versatile tool in integrated pest management programs.
Targets These Pest Species
-
Citrus Mealybug (Planococcus citri)
-
Vine Mealybug (Planococcus ficus)
-
Pseudococcus species (general)
-
Soft scale insects (immature stages)
-
Aphids, thrips, mites, and whiteflies (secondary targets)
Best suited for severe infestations with abundant prey. For preventative use, combine with other biocontrol species.
Ideal Conditions
-
Temperature: 64–81°F (18–27°C)
-
Humidity: 70% or higher
-
Light sensitivity: Adults disperse in bright light; release in low-light conditions
-
Preferred habitat: Greenhouses, adaptable outdoors in mild climates
Application Instructions
-
Open container and allow beetles to acclimate for ~20 minutes before release
-
Release early morning or evening, avoiding bright light and artificial lighting
-
For localized infestations, release beetles directly onto affected plants
-
Adults are mobile and may disperse quickly after release
Release Rates
-
Spot treatment: ~5 adults per infested plant
-
Field use: 250–2,000 beetles per acre
-
Initial release in early spring recommended for season-long impact
-
Repeat as needed where pest pressure persists

Quick Tips
-
Beetles may appear sluggish on arrival—warmth restores activity
-
Pair with Green Lacewings or Minute Pirate Bugs for broader coverage
-
Most effective in high-humidity environments with abundant mealybugs
-
Larvae resemble mealybugs—monitor closely to confirm predator presence
-
Avoid pesticide sprays during release for best establishment
