Dalotia coriaria (formerly Atheta coriaria), commonly known as the Rove Beetle, is a highly mobile, soil-dwelling predator that provides fast and aggressive control of fungus gnats, thrips pupae, shore flies, root aphids, and other root-zone pests. Both adults and larvae feed on pests, while winged adults disperse easily across crops, establishing self-sustaining populations. Versatile and resilient, this species performs well in greenhouses, nurseries, indoor grow rooms, and outdoor covered environments.
How It Works
Adult beetles lay eggs in soil or growing media. Upon hatching, larvae and adults feed on soft-bodied pests near the root zone. Larvae are slender and pale yellow at first, darkening with age, while adults are 3–4 mm long, shiny dark brown to black beetles. Adults fly pot-to-pot, quickly expanding their range. Once established, D. coriaria populations persist and continue to hunt pests without reintroduction.
Targets These Pest Species
Best paired with beneficial nematodes or Stratiolaelaps scimitus for full-spectrum soil pest management.
Ideal Conditions
-
Temperature: 55–90°F (13–32°C)
-
Humidity: 50–80% RH
-
Lifespan: ~21 days at 70°F
-
Reproduction: High, with rapid establishment in organic media
-
Performs better than S. scimitus at lower temperatures, ideal for early-season or cooler conditions
Application Instructions
-
Gently rotate tube before opening to mix beetles evenly
-
Open the lid via cut-out tab and dispense directly onto:
-
Apply in the evening or low-light conditions to reduce stress and improve dispersal
-
Use yellow sticky traps to monitor pest populations weekly
Release Rates
-
Standard: 1–2 beetles per sq. ft.
-
Apply directly to growing media
-
For heavy infestations, combine with nematodes or predatory mites for layered control

Quick Tips
-
Introduce early in the growing cycle for best protection
-
Flying adults ensure wide distribution across crops
-
Highly effective for fungus gnat prevention in propagation areas
-
Monitor with sticky traps and release before pest levels rise
-
Avoid incompatible soil-applied insecticides
