Keep your soil biology alive between cycles, not starting over every run

Grassroots Living Soil Fabric Beds use a BPA-free waterproof MoistureLock liner that covers the upper walls of the bed, leaving a 4" breathable aeration strip at the bottom. This forces water to move downward through the soil instead of escaping out the sides, mimicking the way soil dries in nature and keeping microbiology active throughout the root zone. Each bed ships with PVC corner fittings for a 1" PVC frame you source locally, and comes in sizes from 2x4 to 4x8 with optional trellis fittings.

MoistureLock Liner BPA-Free

A waterproof, chemically inert liner covers the upper walls while a 4" strip of breathable fabric at the bottom handles aeration and air pruning. Water moves downward through the profile instead of escaping sideways.

Natural Top-Down Drying Pattern

Soil dries from the surface downward, the same way it works in the ground. This keeps fungi, bacteria, and beneficial organisms active in the root zone instead of dying off at the edges.

4" Aeration Strip for Air Pruning

The bottom section of breathable fabric promotes oxygen exchange and prevents root circling, so you get the drainage benefits of fabric pots without the side-drying problem.

Sized to Fit Standard Grow Tents

The 2x4 fits a 2x4 tent, the 3x3 goes in a 4x4 tent with room for a drain tray, and the 4x4 fits a 5x5. All beds are 18" tall, leaving headroom for lights and canopy.

Optional Trellis Fittings Included

Choose "With Trellis Fittings" to get 4-way PVC connectors that let you build single or double trellis layers right off the bed frame. No extra hardware to buy or rig up.

Marine-Bonded Construction

Bottom seam is sewn on the outside with marine-bonded thread to prevent rot. Top edges are triple-hemmed. The fabric is UV-resistant, machine washable, and folds flat for storage.

How to set up your Grassroots bed

Cut your PVC

Pick up 1" Schedule 40 PVC from any hardware store. The 2x4 needs four 1.5' verticals, two 2' pieces, and two 4' pieces. Grassroots provides exact cut lists for each bed size on their website.

Assemble the frame

Push the PVC pipes into the included 3-way fittings (basic) or 3-way plus 4-way fittings (trellis version). No glue needed. The friction fit holds firm once the bed is filled with soil.

Slip the fabric over the frame

Drop the fabric bed over the assembled PVC frame. The fabric sleeves slide over each pipe. Position the bed in your tent or growing area before filling, because it gets heavy once there's soil in it.

Fill and plant

Fill with your living soil mix, leaving 3 to 5 inches of headroom for mulch and top dressing. For starting plants, dig a hole in the soil and fill the pocket with a seed-starting mix rather than seeding directly into the soil.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. This listing includes the fabric bed and the specialty PVC corner fittings that you can't find at a hardware store. You will need to buy standard 1" Schedule 40 PVC pipe locally and cut it to length. Grassroots provides exact cut lists for each bed size on their website. If you want everything in one box with PVC included, check out the Grassroots Complete Kit beds instead.
Basic fittings come with 3-way PVC connectors at each corner. That gives you a stable rectangular frame, but no vertical posts. Trellis fittings add 4-way connectors that let you run PVC upward from the corners to support one or two layers of trellis netting. If you think you might want a trellis later, go with the trellis fittings now. Adding them after the bed is full of soil means disassembly.
The MoistureLock liner is designed for living soil because it slows the wet/dry cycle and keeps moisture even. If you're running salt-based fertigation, you generally want faster dry-back, which standard fabric pots handle better. These beds are optimized for organic, no-till, and living soil methods where consistent moisture supports soil biology.
Approximate soil capacity when filled to within a few inches of the top: the 2x4 holds around 55 to 60 gallons, the 3x3 holds around 70 to 80 gallons, the 4x4 holds around 130 to 150 gallons, and the 4x8 holds around 270 to 300 gallons. Leave 3 to 5 inches of headroom for mulch and top dressing. These numbers assume the fabric sides flex inward slightly under soil pressure, so actual capacity is a bit less than a rigid box of the same dimensions.
A drain tray is recommended, especially indoors. The MoistureLock liner prevents most side runoff, but the breathable bottom strip will still let some water through during heavy watering. Grassroots suggests placing the 3x3 bed inside a standard 4x4 plastic drain tray, and the 4x4 in a 5x5 tray. For the 2x4, most growers use a standard 2x4 tent tray.
Growers commonly report 3+ years of continuous use with no degradation. The fabric is UV-resistant and machine washable. The marine-bonded thread on the bottom seam resists rot from prolonged soil contact. If you break down your bed between cycles, wash the fabric on a cool cycle and air dry. Do not tumble dry.

Shipping
Check the order confirmation sent to your email or phone after checkout — it includes a tracking link. If you use the Shop App, you can track your order there too.
Most orders arrive in 3-5 business days. Expedited options (2-day, overnight) are available at checkout if you need it sooner.
Signature is only required on orders over $500. For added privacy, we can ship to your local UPS Store so you pick it up on your own schedule — just ask.
We default to UPS Ground or USPS Ground Advantage. Select an expedited option at checkout and we'll use the appropriate carrier for that service.
  • P.O. boxes: Yes, for small and lightweight items.
  • International: Canada only. Email help@happyhydro.com your address and a screenshot of your cart for a shipping quote.
  • APO/FPO: Not currently available.
For Canadian orders, import duties and taxes are the buyer's responsibility. You'll complete payment using your tracking number at UPS.com when your package arrives.

Multi-light orders, grow tents, orders over $500, and multi-box shipments may incur return shipping charges. AK, HI, and international buyers are responsible for return and warranty shipping. Some vendor-specific policies may apply — check the product page for details.
Refunds are processed through Shopify within 10 business days. Most customers see the credit back in about 5 days.
